  15. <p>     DIED. BEN CHAPMAN, 84, baseball outfielder and manager; in Hoover,
  16. Alabama. As a New York Yankee in the '30s, Chapman became identified
  17. with an aggressive playing style. He led the American League
  18. in stolen bases in four seasons and appeared in four All-Star
  19. games. Off the field he was also known for his bumptiousness,
  20. even locking horns with revered teammate Babe Ruth. In 1945
  21. he became manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, a posting that
  22. led to the most infamous episode of his career--a campaign
  23. of racial taunting aimed at Brooklyn Dodger Jackie Robinson,
  24. the first black player in the majors.
